Monday, December 21, 2009
Iconic fashion designer Tom Ford pens the screenplay and direct A Single Man, based on the provocative 1964 Christopher Isherwood novel. Due out in February in Australia, but has been garnering rave reviews around the globe, and praise for first-time director, Ford, and his entire cast.

The song's called Ambling Alp. Enjoy.

Noah Baumbach, director of Kicking and Screaming, the 1995 cult fave about a group of fresh-out-of-college friends who are restless and disillusioned with life, returns with Greenberg, basically doing the same thing but with 40 year olds. But don't get me wrong- I think it looks delightful. And no surprise there, Baumbach also wrote the screenplays for Fantastic Mr Fox, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Squid and the Whale, to name a few. Enjoy.

Arghh! Oh wait no its a snickers bar...

So epic it could be Bon Jovi, but with the early weezer sound and the tamborine its unlikely. But still not affraid to throw a little reverb in there Surfer Blood have 'jumped off the blocks' with a 'killer' Swim to the end

So maybe I'm not going to marry Kid Sister and have little hip hop children with her, I've come to the realisation that the chances are getting slimmer by the day. But can't a man dream about a life with a woman who raps about donuts!?

Her much anticipated debut album originally titled Dream Date was sent back to the drawing board but its back now with the new title Ultraviolet. The new name and the new single both indicate a new direction for Kid Sis. Right Hand Hi maybe a dance floor filler but it’s a far cry from the Old School party jams of Family Reunion (not included on the new album), at least the release will mean that Pro Nails, Control and Let Me Bang will see the light of day in a proper release.

Keep it goin' louder

Diplo and Switch's Zombie Killin' Dance floor fillin' project Major Lazer has just released its second video for the Keep It Goin' Louder feat. Nina Sky and Ricky Blaze. Thick with pop hooks and vocoders this song is about 4 seconds away from being a mobile ringtone...enjoy the glory before the hangover...

Pink, blue, canary and all the colours of the pastel rainbow

The problem I think with kitchen's is its not a give take relationship. I come in there I'm always like "Hey Kitchen, Let's do this, let's make something tasty!" Granted when i invariably make something awful I'm not living up to my end of the bargain, but just once, just one time I'd like the Kitchen to "Hang around baby we be baking a cake for you." DAMN YOU YACHT AND YOUR MAGICAL KITCHEN!!

You're weighing the gold, I'm watching you sinking, Fool's Gold

Fool’s Gold tell me two things.
One... that when I am old I can still be crazy and young women will still find me attractive (YOU BETTER NOT BE LYING TO ME FOOL’S GOLD)
Two...that everyone one wants to wear pastels and write the next Gracelands album

Neither of which i think is a bad thing really

In the heat of the night

Yesterday it was the temperature of the sun all over town, people sheltered in boxes of air conditioning and any kind of effort could risk serious injury. But those first awkward days of summer are the signal of an oncoming season of balmy evening spent quietly sipping on beverages with nothing else to do but cool down and listen to sweet crooning.

"your lips are like little pieces of bacon..."

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

kind of shits me when 17 and 18 year olds are not only in a band, but they're writing exceptionally good tunes with exceptionally good lyrics that are funny, thoughtful and self-deprecating, centered around drunk hook ups, awkward sex and bacon. i could've only wished to be that cool way back in the day.

check out Avi Buffalo- these kids from Long Beach are generating a lot of buzz, especially as bands their age should just not be this good yet. this next song has a definite Shins/Band of Horses vibe, but trust me, Avi Buffalo do their own thing and with the stuff they're putting out there while being fresh out of high school, we can only expect their stuff to get better and better...

It’s refreshing to see someone else as concerned with soft drink as me

Whats in a name?

I love it when a band when a band really takes the time to come up with a great name. It may seem frivolous and we should let the music speak for itself. But what if you’re not a good band, what if the best you can hope for is mediocrity then what happens to your dreams of international rock stardom.
That’s where awesome names come in...

This week’s runners up include

Tiger! Shit! Tiger, Tiger!
Apologies, i have none.
Bin Laden Blowin Up

Les Savy Fav(ourite)

Monday, October 12, 2009
On the weekend I had to go on impromptu road trip to visit family. The upside of the 8 hour return trip was I got trawl through the depth of my IPod through some on my favourite forgotten sing-along albums, which trapped in the confines of my little car I belted out some classic renditions of Clash, Lifetime, TV on the Radio, Small Brown Bike and these guys Les Savy Fav.

Let’s stay friends was an album that probably didn’t get the showing it deserved. The appeal of previous songs like the Sweat Descends just didn’t seem to grab as many people this time round. But its a great album, sometimes its solemn and other times is they provide the party anthems to the apocalypse. Les Savy Fav is the band the Shins wished they could be if only they knew how to shout.

who is Har Mar Superstar?

Friday, October 9, 2009
just a little add-on to the previous post, a tiny taste of the vast talents of Sean "Har Mar Superstar" Tillman... comedian, actor, singer, chubby balding guy.

Ellen Page and friends to pen hipster comedy for HBO

Ellen Page, Ali Shawkat (of Arrested Development fame) and Sean "Har Mar Superstar" Tillman have just signed a deal with HBO to write and produce a comedy for HBO about two hipsters and their perilous adventures as they travel to LA to become artists... "of any kind". Well, guess what- everybody LOVES to make fun of hipsters, even (especially!) other hipsters- so as you can imagine, the hilarious blog-bashing of this project is already spreading through the internets like wildfire...

Burn Hollywood
: Precious hipsters. Precious people in sweaters. The comedy supposedly will outline the perils of hipsterism. What perils? What goddamn perils do hipsters have? They only have the time and energy to be hipsters, because they don’t have any problems. They wear glasses without lenses for christsakes, what perils? Does their vast underground music collection absorb toxic waste then mutate? Do their ironic shirts get burned in a wildfire?

Warming Glow
: Oh boy, I hope their trust funds are big enough to support their dreams! You girls be careful — I’d hate for your kaffiyeh scarf to get caught in the spokes of your fixed-gear bicycle on the way to Hotel Cafe for your band’s debut. What would they do without their lead ukulele player?!

Not too worried on this end, though- seems like the description of this project insinuates parody, so that should make everyone happy. HBO is usually pretty reliable and call me crazy, but Page is likeable enough, Shawkat was just plain brilliant as Maebe Funke and the zany Har Mar Superstar, well- check him out here... I think this has potential...

found the official video for that Girls song and it's quite pretty. so pretty that im posting the same song twice in one day... DEAL WITH IT. here, once again, is Lust For Life...

Devendra makes sweet sweet love to Phoenix tune

ah Phoenix- those cute french boys and their catchy pop anthems have won themselves a veritable wealth of admirers this year, including very cool artists, such as passionpit and animal collective, who've undoubtedly been keen to jump on that bandwagon of success by remixing phoenix songs lately. here's devendra bandhart's subdued and mellowed version of the song Rome. deeelightful.

Clark

Sunday, September 27, 2009
Clark, out on Warp, so very much in their vain of music, he's being called the new aphex twin which may be a bit missleading as its not as hard, but it definately has the darker elements and is still very interesting stuff. Here's Garden Growl from his latest album Totems Flare.

While Garden Growl may be an awesome song it is lacking in the video area, this Clark video on the other hand is not...

Long walks on the beach...

I'm not one who is particularly known for their love of the beach, but this song does really do make me pine for white sand and blue ocean.

Coconut Records

Saturday, September 12, 2009
i've had a sweet spot for coconut records ever since i heard the first album a few years back. coconut records is jason schwartzman's solo project and after writing, producing and releasing this first album on his own, schwartzman would mail a polaroid picture he took himself with every album sold. this debut album, called Nighttiming, featured duets with zooey deschanel, kirsten dunst and brother robert schwartzman, frontman of the band Rooney. cover art is done by cousin roman coppola, brother of sofia and son of francis ford coppola (now there's a gene pool i wouldn't mind diving into...) here's a new track off the second album, Davy.

BALLOOOOOOONS!!!

Possibly the diriest/most fowl mouth lady in the world and therefore one of my favourites, Amanda Blank, has just dropped the first clip from her debut album 'I love you'

disco to country to hip hop to... Feist.

Saturday, August 29, 2009

Another cover - not particularily recent or anything, just a good one, especially on a Sunday. Canadian darling Feist and fellow canuck indie-rock dudes The Constantines team up to cover Dolly Parton and Kenny Roger's Islands in the Stream, which you might also recognise from 1998, covered in Pras' (feat Mya and Ol' Dirty Bastard) Ghetto Superstar.

According to the Arts&Crafts page, "the song was recorded together in Toronto one chilly day in early February following a game of ice hockey and a round of hot chocolates." well. you can't really top that now can you? Listen here.

ps- did you know this song was originally written by the Bee Gees? makes it even better, doesn't it?

mmmm.... fragile.

Click here to listen to a cover of Empire of the Sun's Walking on a Dream by Kate Miller Heidke... some have described it as gentle, moving and even FRAGILE. quite a departure from the original, a throbbing egotistical heat-filled glitter fest.

glistening, sex-saturated synth-pop ...for kids!

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Here's a hilarious and suprisingly catchy video of Montreal's favourite electrosynth duo, Chromeo, whose music has been described as "a shameless return to the glistening, sex-saturated synth-pop which ruled the eighties." (BBC music), lending talents to the kids show that will breed the raddest little bunch of up-and-coming music geniuses, Yo Gabba Gabba.

The show, created by child actor and lead signer of The Aquabats, Christian Jacobs (also known as MC Bat Commander) and Scott Schultz of 90s indie band Majestic, is presumably named after a Ramones' lyric (Gabba Gabba Hey) and is a tasty treat for the eyes and ears with segments like Biz's Beat of the Day, which teaches kids to beatbox, or host DJ Lance Rock getting crazy kiddies (who are now burgeoning youtube superstars) to dance to electro-synth pop. And all this within the confines of a set that looks like a the shiny 80s exploded all over a loud, brightly coloured vintage game show. amazing.

Other guests that have graced Yo Gabba Gabba's stage include The Roots, Jack Black, Of Montreal, The Shins, Shiny Toy Guns, Tony Hawk, Elijah Wood, Mates of State, The Clientele, The Ting Tings, comedian Rhys Darby, and more.

Jessica Hopper's new book

Thursday, August 6, 2009

If this book came from anyone else I would be dubious, particularly after its cover art, BUT it is from Jessica Hopper.

Her Bio says
"Jessica Hopper is a music and culture critic whose work regularly appears in Chicago Reader, LA Weekly, SPIN, ANP and Chicago Tribune and has also been included in DaCapo's Best of Music Writing 2004, 2005 and 2007. She is also the music consultant for the public radio show, This American Life. Her widely-anthologized essay, "Emo: Where the Girls Aren't" was described as "influential" by The New York Times.

Holding fast to the music-is-my-life credo, Hopper has also done time as a tour manager, band publicist, DJ, touring bassist, Girls Rock Camp booster, and fanzine publisher. She lives in Chicago."

Above all this, she wrote what was easily the best column in Punk Planet until that sad sad day when the magazine folded, she gave an amazing portrait of the Chicago punk scene and still does to an extent at , tinyluckygenius aka the Unicorn's tear.

Hopper has just released a new book called "The Girls' Guide to Rocking: How to Start a Band, Book Gigs, and Get Rolling to Rock Stardom". And it is what it says it is, a guide to starting a band, talented or not, and what to do next.

Au Revoir Simone

Photobucket

3 peice Au Revoir had been pottering along producing some beautiful sounds but probably didn’t pop up onto alot of radars until they provide the amazing vocals for Air France’s epic rework of Friendly Fires Paris. I still think that that song will one day be used in a film as the music for a scene where the young pragmatist tries ecstasy for the first time and falls backwards into a crowd at a festival with their face beaming with a smile. Out of the back of that exposure Au Revoir Simone have come back with their new album Still Night, Still Light.

Modest Mouse

The first time I ever heard Modest Mouse I heard I was at Waterloo records in Austin I was on a blind date with a girl named Kendra and she played them to me. Both our parents had ambushed us at a dinner it became obvious they had planed the whole thing and it was embarrassing for all concerned, but then it turned out to be one of the best nights I’ve ever had. She was a professional lacrosse player, we almost killed a dear, we got moved on by police at make out point and we had brownies. She showed me how to play lacrosse and while we sat in some lawn chairs in an abandoned lot she told me about her ex boyfriend in jail for stat rape. I said I would call her, she said I probably wouldn’t, she was right.

I like how at the newsagent they seem to gloss over softcore porn by calling them Health magazines...although that magazine entitled "Nuts" was a little less sutble.
